Pre-Op Instructions
When your dog or cat undergoes an anaesthetic and surgery, there are always certain risks, but these can be reduced by following the instructions below. If your rabbit or small pet is coming in for surgery you will be given more specific instructions relating to the guidelines for with-holding food and water etc in the relevant species.
-
Your pet may be given a light meal the evening before the surgery. No food should be given after midnight. Water may be given until 7.30 am on the morning of the operation.
-
Please ensure dogs are given the opportunity to pass urine and faeces before arriving at the surgery.
-
Cats must be kept inside overnight, with clean water and an appropriate litter tray. Please make sure everyone in the house remembers not to feed the cat in the morning, and not to let the cat out of the cat flap!
-
Dogs undergoing surgery should be presented clean and dry. Dirt and sand present in the coat increases the risk of post operative infection, especially where there will be a surgical wound on the underside of the animal.
-
Animals are usually admitted between 8.30 and 9.15 am on the day of their operation (9.00 and 10.00am at Newport). Where this time is difficult, by arrangement animals can be dropped of the night before (subject to a boarding charge).
-
Please bring dogs in on a suitable lead and a well fitting collar, and cats in a secure basket, all labelled clearly with your pet's name and your surname.
-
You will be asked to read and sign an anaesthetic permission form before you leave your pet. If someone else is dropping off your pet for you they can sign on your behalf if you have given them permission to do so. We are unable to perform procedures without the signed consent of an adult (over 18 years of age).
-
We usually phone you once the surgery is completed (remember to bring your mobile phone number with you), but if you have not already heard from us we ask you to phone the clinic about 2.30pm to check on your pet’s progress.
-
They generally are ready to go home mid to late afternoon. We ask that they are collected before 6.30pm at St Andrews, or 5.30 at Ladybank and Newport. Dogs will not be discharged until they are awake enough to walk themselves to your vehicle, but they might not manage a long walk home!
-
When you collect your pet they may still be slightly sleepy, but should be able to walk short distances. Old or very ill animals may be drowsy for longer. Occasionally we suggest animals stay in overnight so we can monitor them. |
