Myxomatosis Alert September 2011

We have been seeing a marked increase in the level of myxomatosis in the clinics recently, especially in rabbits living in the Guardbridge and Leuchars areas in the last few days.

This horrible disease is transmitted by rabbit fleas and other biting insects such as midges, so direct contact with infected animals is not required.  Early symptoms include swelling of eyelids, nose region and genitalia.

Myxomatosis is a viral disease, and there is no specific treatment for it.  Mortality levels are very high, even with intensive treatment, and unfortunately we regularly end up putting affected rabbits to sleep.

This disease is however preventable by a vaccination, which we recommend to all our rabbit owners.  A single injection twice a year (from 6 weeks of age) gives good protection against the disease.

If your rabbit is not currently vaccinated, then we recommend you contact us to arrange prompt vaccination.  Please be aware however that it may take 2-3 weeks for your rabbit to generate immunity to the disease following vaccination.
