Faints and Collapses
A faint or collapse usually occurs when an animal is active (see also Fits below), and are caused by failures in the circulatory (heart and blood vessels) or respiratory systems (airways and lungs). Animals which have fainted or collapsed will often spontaneously recover, as the faint reduces the stress on the affected systems, but it is usually best to contact the duty vet as soon as possible to discuss the problem and arrange for the animal to be seen.
One specific condition we see once or twice a year is heat stroke, usually on hot days when an excitable animal has been over-active. Please contact the duty vet as soon as possible if you think your animal is suffering from heat stroke. Showering the animal with cold water is sensible, but be aware of over-chilling the animal, who's ability to control their temperature may be temporarily affected.
Fits
Fits may occur in active or quiet animals, and occur due to abnormal brain activity
In known epileptic animals, the occasional fit is probably to be expected - you will know the type of fit your animal usually has. If an unusual or prolonged or more active than normal fit happens, then if you have special medication to give them when they fit, give that as directed. However if that doesn't help, then it is probably best to phone the duty vet.
In animals not expected to fit, then firstly the best thing to do is to leave the animal in peace for a couple of minutes. Most fits are short and non-life threatening. Be aware that animals may become aggressive around the time of a fit, and when fitting will not be aware of their actions. Keep children away from fitting animals, and it is usually best just to leave the animal where they are, ideally dimming lights and reducing noise while they fit.
If the fit was not expected then it is sensible to phone the duty vet for further advice, especially if there is possible access to slug pellets.
